Working with video files

A few file and browser habits prevent most upload and preview surprises. Get the format right before uploading, know how to test embeds locally, and clear caches when a change doesn't seem to take.

Convert .MOV to .MP4

.MOV files (common from Apple devices) don't play consistently across every browser. For the widest compatibility, convert to .MP4 with H.264 video before you upload:

  • On macOS, open the file in QuickTime Player and use File → Export As → 1080p to produce an .mp4.
  • With HandBrake (free, cross-platform), load the .MOV and use the Fast 1080p30 preset, which outputs H.264 MP4.
  • Either way, keep the resolution reasonable (1080p is plenty for most VSLs) so uploads and playback stay fast.

Testing on localhost

When you're building a page locally and domain lock is on, the embed won't load until your local origin is allowed:

  • Add the hostname (for example, localhost or 127.0.0.1) under the video's Settings → Domain access—see Authorize domains—or temporarily turn Only allow approved domains off while developing.
  • Alternatively, test on a deployed staging page and add that URL to your allowed domains—closer to production than localhost.
  • Use the Preview action in the app to check the player in isolation before wiring it into your page.

Clearing cache & reloading

If a change you made in the Studio or a video's Customize tab doesn't show up:

  1. In Customize, select Save and then Publish to this video.
  2. Hard-reload the page to bypass the browser cache (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R). The stable embed normally does not need replacement.
  3. If you still see the old version, try an incognito/private window to rule out cached assets entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I convert .MOV to .MP4?

.MOV doesn't play consistently across all browsers. Converting to .MP4 (H.264) gives the widest compatibility. QuickTime or HandBrake both do this in a couple of clicks.

My embed won't load on localhost.

If domain lock is on, add localhost (or 127.0.0.1) to your authorized domains, or test on a staging URL you've allowed.

I changed a setting but don't see it.

Select Save, then Publish to this video, and hard-reload. Normal configuration changes do not require a new embed snippet.
